The Muwatta’
Malik said, “No one should recite any of the pieces of Qur’an that require a prostration after the prayers of Subh and ‘Asr. This is because the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, forbade prayer after Subh until after the sun had risen, and after ‘Asr until the sun had set, and prostration is part of the prayer. So no one should recite any piece of Qur’an requiring a prostration during these two periods of time.” (The Muwatta’ of Imam Malik ibn Anas)
Mudawwanah
(He said): So I said: “Then if he recites [ayats of sajda] after ‘Asr or after Subh should he prostrate them?” (He said): “If he recites them after ‘Asr and the sun is pure white without any yellowness entering, I think he should prostrate them, but if yellowness has entered it I do not think he should prostrate them. If he recites them after Subh and [the dawn] is not yet light, then I think he should prostrate them but if it has become light I do not think he should prostrate them.” (Then he said): “Don’t you see that the janazas are prayed over as long as the sun has not altered or it has become light after the salah of Subh? It is similar with the sajda in my view.” (Malik said): “There is no harm in a man reciting [an ayat of] sajda after Subh as long as it has not become light and after ‘Asr as long as the sun has not altered and in his prostrating it. Then if it becomes light or the sun alters, then I dislike that he recite it. If he recites it when it has become light and when the sun has yellowed he does not prostrate it.” (Al-Mudawwana al-Kubra)
Risala
“You should also do them if you recite any of these ayats after praying Subh, provided the light is not yet bright, and after ‘Asr provided the sun has not turned yellow.” (The Risala of Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani)
